N.s forældre sad i små kår, men var indstillet på at hjælpe deres flittige søn frem således at han kunne nå en højere social placering. 1794 blev han "med fordelagtige vidnesbyrd og bedste karakter" student fra Schouboes institut, tog filosofikum og begyndte at studere teologi.

          Da faderen døde 1796 måtte studierne afbrydes for at moderen kunne underholdes. Indehaveren af Schouboes institut, F. C. Schouboe, blev formynder for N. og skaffede ham stilling som lærer ved instituttet hvor han efterhånden p
